South Carolina residents and elected officers alike are outraged by the homicide of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, shot useless by Rick Chow, 58, who suspected the teenager of shoplifting water bottles on the nice and cozy spring night of Might 28.

Congressman James E. Clyburn, who proudly serves South Carolina’s sixth district, weighed in on the killing, which happened alongside Parklane Highway, a fundamental street of the state’s capital metropolis.

“I’m horrified and deeply saddened by the mindless homicide of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton in Columbia,” mentioned Clyburn, in an announcement launched on Might 30. “His household and family members ought to be celebrating his latest eighth grade commencement from Summit Parkway Center College. As a substitute, they’re mourning this unimaginable loss. My prayers are with them and all the neighborhood throughout this devastating time.”

Clyburn spoke on the distorted picture of the Black males upheld within the public eye.

“This tragedy ought to have by no means occurred. The criminalization of Black males and boys and the historic development of portray them as aggressors have again and again led to lethal and heartbreaking circumstances. Cyrus Carmack-Belton has since been declared harmless, however his supposed crime of shoplifting a bottle of water shouldn’t have price him his life. I pray justice is swift.”

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott described the incident as “mindless” and introduced that Chow was arrested and charged with homicide on Might 30.

“I feel it’s essential that we get the reality out. There’s lots of totally different narratives being circulated that [are] not true, however the information are very disturbing,” mentioned Lott, in a press convention broadcast by native NBC affiliate, WIS TV. “The homeowners of the comfort retailer suspected him of shoplifting. He didn’t shoplift something. We have now no proof that he stole something in anyway. There was a verbal confrontation contained in the comfort retailer. The sufferer went outdoors–he took off operating. The son of the proprietor of the comfort retailer gave chase.”

Lott then described how the harmless teen’s life got here to an finish.

“The daddy, who owns the comfort retailer, joined within the chase. He was armed with a pistol,” Lott instructed reporters. “They chased the younger man to Springtree Residences. The younger man fell down, however received again up. Sooner or later, the son mentioned that…the sufferer had a gun and we did get better a gun that was near his physique. At that time, the daddy shot the younger man within the again. He was not laying on the bottom. He didn’t have his fingers up.”

“Even when he had shoplifted 4 bottles of water–which is what he initially took out the cooler after which put again–even when he’d executed that, That’s not one thing you shoot anyone over–a lot much less a 14 yr previous –you simply don’t try this.”

Protestors have since descended on the shop, vandalizing the property the place the center schooler’s life was taken as he ran away from the bullets that struck the again of his physique. Whereas some have remained peaceable of their demonstrations, others have taken to violence.

“That retailer didn’t shoot that 14 yr previous. The particular person accountable has been arrested. He’s in jail,” mentioned Lott. “He’s in jail, precisely the place he must be – that’s the place justice is being served. Justice is being served by us going out and making an arrest. Justice will not be served by getting in and stealing circumstances of beer. That’s simply not what justice is about.”

South Carolina Consultant Todd Rutherford (D-SC-74) lamented over the teenager’s dying, publicly stating that the 14-year-old boy simply may have been his little one.

“This might have been MY son. In reality, this WAS my son. When Cyrus Carmack-Belton’s mom despatched this image to me I needed to do a double take as a result of he appeared a lot like my center son,” shared Rutherford, from his private Fb Meta account. “What occurred to him wasn’t an accident. It’s one thing that the Black neighborhood has skilled for generations: being racially profiled, then shot down on the street like a canine. Phrases can’t describe the ache I really feel having identified this household for many years.”

Rutherford requested that the general public assist the slain teen’s household of their time of want.

“I’m asking that our neighborhood proceed to wrap their arms round this household as they’ve joined the membership that no Black household ever needs to be part of. You’re outraged. I’m outraged. And this is the reason I can’t assist however battle to make sure historical past isn’t whitewashed or forgotten,” he mentioned. “This isn’t an anomaly, however I do know America will be higher. And THAT is what we’re preventing for. As a result of no household ought to must cope with this in 2023.”

The taking pictures dying of Cyrus is eerily much like the March 16, 1991 killing of fifteen-year-old LaTasha Harlins by the hands of retailer proprietor Quickly Ja Du. In accordance with data launched by the U.S. Nationwide Archives, on that day “Harlins went to Empire Liquor Retailer, which was owned by Du, to buy orange juice for her grandmother. A confrontation ensued when Du suspected Harlins of making an attempt to steal. Safety cameras confirmed that when Harlins turned to go away, she had cash in her hand, and Du shot her at the back of the top.”

Just like Chow, Du was charged for the killing. Nevertheless, the Nationwide Archives stories that whereas a jury discovered Du responsible of voluntary manslaughter, “Choose Joyce Karlin overruled the jury, and sentenced Du to 5 years of probation, 400 hours of neighborhood service, and a $500 high-quality.”

Like Du, previous to the killing, Chow was already at odds with youths in the neighborhood.

A video posted to social media earlier this month allegedly exhibits youth locked in a bodily brawl within the shop with employees who’re clearly armed with no less than one deadly weapon and a metallic pipe. Sheriff Lott acknowledged that there had been a number of confrontations and issues on the location previous to the killing.
