East Baltimore Black Wax Museum gets $2 million in federal funding

The Nationwide Nice Blacks in Wax Museum obtained a $2 million federal funding, which was offered by U.S. lawmakers Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) to museum co-founder and President Joanne Martin on March 31.

“These funds symbolize the power to maintain a cultural identification,” stated Mfume. “On the finish of the day, [the museum] will present schooling for younger folks time and again. Busloads of scholars come right here each summer time to know this complete notion of historical past.”

The museum’s funds have been derived from Congress’ $1.7 trillion 2023 omnibus appropriations invoice. Over $80 million has been secured for Baltimore initiatives—a number of designated for infrastructure in Black communities.

Funded initiatives embrace $1.75 million to revive The Juanita Jackson Mitchell Authorized Middle, a legislation workplace previously owned by the primary African-American girl to graduate from the College of Maryland Francis King Carey Faculty of Regulation and apply legislation in Maryland.

Elmer Martin died in 2001 and was a driving pressure for the wax museum.
