Youngblood instructed the outlet that his great-great-grandfather, Louis Eckford, purchased the ranch land after he and his spouse Eliza had been free of slavery. After Eckford died in 1896, half of the 147.5-acre tract of land was left to his spouse, and the opposite half handed on to his 9 youngsters.

When Eliza handed away, a white cash lender from a close-by ranch, Fritz Korth, secured a deed belief on the land as fee for a $300 mortgage Eliza had taken from Korth earlier than her demise. After none of her youngsters claimed the land following her passing, the land handed to the Korths, who now declare that the Eckford youngsters’s shares had been additionally purchased by Korth. Korth paid $735.50 for part-ownership of the land in 1939.

In 2008, ConocoPhillips signed a lease with the Korths in addition to a few of the Eckford descendants and started drilling for oil on the land. There are no less than 200 descendants of the Eckford household. It was presently that the Korth household claimed they owned the land outright, and ConocoPhillips sided with them out of comfort, WSJ experiences.

Nevertheless, a Texas jury confirmed over the summer season that the Eckford household co-owns the land, and Youngblood determined to sue to make sure his household receives the oil royalty payouts that they deserve.

“If it goes to a verdict, I feel we will get much more,” mentioned the previous emergency room physician. “That is about legacy. We’re not right here to relitigate the Civil Struggle. Whatever the judgment, it’s not going to alter my life. However for a lot of of my relations, it may very well be transformative.”

Korth’s great-grandson Chico Korth claims that as a result of his household paid taxes on the land and their identify is on the deed, the land belongs to his household.

“It appears very easy that if you happen to pay taxes, and also you’re working the land and you’ve got a deed that stipulates that you’re the proprietor of the land, then it’s yours.”

Youngblood who left his profession as a working towards doctor to launch his funding agency in 1998 and is a member of President Biden’s Intelligence Advisory Board — says successful the lawsuit would honor the achievements of his ancestors after being free of slavery.
