Social Media Slams Filmmaker’s Attempt to Paint Missionary Who Attempted to Christianize Isolated Tribe As a Saint

A trailer for a brand new documentary about missionary John Chau‘s journey to the Andaman Islands within the Indian Ocean to evangelize the indigenous group has sparked criticism and disdain in some corners of social media.

Critics argue that “The Mission” portrays the Christian preacher as a martyr or saint whereas failing to acknowledge his function as a colonizer who confirmed little regard for the cultural and perception system of the North Sentinelese individuals.

Chau’s second try to achieve the individuals is on the crux of the movie. On November 17, 2018, the 26-year-old stepped on the island’s seashore believing his God advised him to transform the tribe to Christianity.

“Ge dedicated a criminal offense to do it,” one individual added. “He paid off locals from the mainland to take him there. They really went to jail for it. The island, which is ruled by the Indian authorities, has been virtually untouched by modernity because the early 1900s, leaving the tribe’s inhabitants at about 200.

Vishvajit Pandya, an Indian anthropologist, explains that the group was not at all times “uncontacted” or “remoted” till contacted by Europeans.
