FBI seized phones, iPad from New York City Mayor Eric Adams

NEW YORK (AP) — FBI brokers seized telephones and an iPad from New York Metropolis Mayor Eric Adams this week as a part of an investigation into his marketing campaign fundraising, his legal professional confirmed Friday.

The seizures occurred after an occasion Monday evening, in response to an announcement from the mayor’s legal professional, Boyd Johnson.

“On Monday evening, the FBI approached the mayor after an occasion. The Mayor instantly complied with the FBI’s request and offered them with digital gadgets,” the assertion stated. “The mayor has not been accused of any wrongdoing and continues to cooperate with the investigation.”

The seizure of the gadgets, first reported by The New York Instances, got here days after federal brokers searched the Brooklyn house of Adams’ prime marketing campaign fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. That search prompted the mayor to cancel a deliberate journey to satisfy with White Home officers in Washington and as a substitute return to New York.

Adams, a Democrat, stated nothing publicly about his telephones being seized when he met with reporters on Wednesday and stated he wasn’t conscious of any wrongdoing by members of his marketing campaign group.

In an announcement Friday, Johnson stated Adams was dedicated to cooperating with the probe.

“After studying of the federal investigation, it was found that a person had not too long ago acted improperly. Within the spirit of transparency and cooperation, this conduct was instantly and proactively reported to investigators,” he stated, providing no additional particulars.

A spokesperson for the U.S. legal professional in Manhattan declined to remark.

“As a former member of legislation enforcement, I anticipate all members of my workers to comply with the legislation and absolutely cooperate with any kind of investigation—and I’ll proceed to do precisely that. I’ve nothing to cover,” Adams, a former police captain, stated in an announcement.

The main focus of the investigation hasn’t been publicly disclosed by prosecutors, however a search warrant obtained by the New York Instances indicated authorities are inspecting whether or not the Adams marketing campaign conspired with the Turkish authorities to obtain donations from international sources, funneled by way of straw donors.

Adams on Wednesday stated he had no private information of any improper fundraising, and didn’t imagine he had something to personally worry from the investigation. Neither Adams nor Suggs have been publicly accused of wrongdoing.

On the time, the mayor’s chief Metropolis Corridor lawyer had confirmed that the administration was speaking with federal prosecutors, however declined to debate what that entailed.
