Oprah’s Book Club selects Jesmyn Ward’s ‘Let Us Descend’

NEW YORK (AP) — Oprah Winfrey’s new e book membership choose highlights an writer she has lengthy admired, Jesmyn Ward.

On Tuesday, Winfrey introduced she had chosen Ward’s “Let Us Descend,” which got here out this week. “Let Us Descend” is a slave narrative set within the nineteenth century and follows a teenage lady’s journey throughout the American South.

Ward, 46, is among the many most acclaimed writers of her technology. Her earlier works embody the novels “Salvage the Bones” and “Sing, Unburied, Sing,” each winners of the Nationwide Ebook Award.

In 2022, she turned the youngest winner of the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction.

“I’ve learn all of Jesmyn Ward’s books and have been a fan of her writing for years,” Winfrey stated in an announcement. “‘Let Us Descend’ is an important work for our tradition and I’m so excited to have her latest providing as a part of our Ebook Membership.”

Ward has additionally written such nonfiction as “Males We Reaped” and “Navigate Your Stars.”

In an announcement Tuesday, she expressed her lifelong admiration for Winfrey and the way she was “deeply moved by Ms. Winfrey’s potential to problem herself creatively and her unabashed championing of literature and the written phrase.”

“I attempted to emulate all of this in my very own life, and over the past 20 years, I labored my approach via rejection and revision to now, once I discover myself in a momentous level in my profession,” her assertion reads.
