Family Reaches Settlement In 2017 Death

It’s been six years because the demise of 19-year-old Kenneka Jenkins, the Illinois teen who died of hypothermia in 2017 after she stumbled right into a lodge walk-in freezer on the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Resort & Convention Heart in Rosemont, Illinois. Officers have since dominated Jenkins’ demise as an “accident,” stating that there was no foul play concerned within the teen’s passing, however the proof hasn’t stopped her mom, Tereasa Martin, from protecting the case alive. 

The grieving matriarch has been utilizing the hashtag “J4KENNEKA4LIFE,” to pay tribute to her daughter’s legacy. On Jan. 17, she posted a wonderful video of the younger teen with the caption that learn, “KENNEKA’s GOING TO Get HER JUSTICE WITH THE BLOOD OF JESUS. 4KENNEKA4LIFE.”

On Sept. 10, 2017, a lodge worker discovered Jenkins’ physique inside a walk-in freezer in a kitchen on the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Resort & Convention Heart. Authorities stated the teenager was partying on the location on the evening of Sept. 9, 2017, with a gaggle of mates for a non-public lodge social gathering. 

Surveillance footage launched in October 2017 captured Jenkins stumbling out of a lower-level elevator and struggling to take care of steadiness as she walked by a first-floor kitchen. A toxicology report later concluded that Jenkins had alcohol and a drug used to deal with epilepsy in her system on the time of her demise.

In 2018, Jenkins’ mom filed a $50 million wrongful demise lawsuit towards the lodge, naming the lodge’s restaurant and the institution’s personal safety firm as defendants. She accused all three events and of “failing to safe” restricted areas within the lodge.

Within the swimsuit, Martin additionally accused the Crowne Plaza Chicago of “sustaining a faulty and defective freezer” and alleged that the corporate allowed their “harmful” freezer to “stay in operation, unsupervised and open to the general public.”

Martin and the Rosemont-based lodge agreed to settle the lawsuit privately in August. 

In August, Martin was reportedly delivered a giant win in her lawsuit towards the lodge. Based on CBS Information, the grieving matriarch and officers from the Rosemont-based lodge agreed to privately settle the lawsuit. Jenkins’ household agreed to maintain the phrases of the deal personal on account of “security and privateness issues,” the outlet famous.

“The widespread publicity of this case, together with uncontrolled hypothesis and social media commentary, has resulted in varied threats made towards varied people within the case,” authorized reps for Martin wrote in a press release, in response to CBS Information. “One of many important phrases of the settlement for all events was sustaining the confidentiality of the settlement.”
