Rep Jamaal Bowman pulls fire alarm as House votes on funding bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman acknowledged triggering a hearth alarm Saturday in one of many U.S. Capitol workplace buildings as lawmakers scrambled to go a invoice to fund the federal government earlier than the midnight shutdown deadline.

The funding package deal was in the end permitted 335-91 on Saturday afternoon, with most Republicans and nearly all Democrats — together with Bowman — supporting the invoice.

After the vote, Republicans, together with Home Speaker Kevin McCarthy, criticized Bowman over the fireplace alarm. Some lawmakers even floated the thought of drafting a movement to expel or censure him from the Home.

“This could not go with out punishment,” McCarthy advised reporters. “This is a humiliation.”

He added that he plans to speak with the Democratic chief Hakeem Jeffries of New York to determine a potential response.

However Jeffries met with Bowman shortly after the vote and Bowman stated his fellow New York colleague was “supportive.”

“He understood that it was a mistake and that’s all it was,” he stated. Bowman added that the response from McCarthy and different Republicans is dishonest.

“(McCarthy’s) attempting to weaponize a mistake of me coming, dashing to get to a vote as one thing nefarious when it wasn’t,” he stated.
