NY lieutenant governor cheers African American Day Parade

One of many largest and oldest parades celebrating American Black tradition, the African American Day parade, is ready to kick off its 54th annual occasion this weekend in Harlem on Sunday, Sept. 17. 

The parade has been operated by the African American Day Parade Inc. (AADP) since 1969, after the unique 13 organizers shaped the concept the earlier yr. 

The day earlier than the parade, on Saturday, Sept. 16, AADP will even maintain a “Get Concerned” Neighborhood Literacy, Well being & Tradition celebration for the primary time, on the plaza of the State Workplace Constructing on one hundred and twenty fifth Road.

Grand marshals this yr embrace Bevy Smith, TV and radio host, creator, and actor; Pleasure Bivins, director of the Schomburg Middle for Analysis in Black Tradition; Joaquin Dean, founder and CEO of Ruff Ryders Ent; and Ashley Keiko, musician, entrepreneur, and proprietor of Keiko Studios Music Academy.

The AADP was based in 1968 by the Afro-American Day and United Federation of Black Neighborhood Organizations, proper after the Civil Rights Act was handed, organizers stated. 

The primary assembly was held at 2315 Seventh Avenue in Harlem, overseen by group leaders equivalent to Livingston Wingate, who served as the primary chairperson, and Conrad Peters. They had been joined by 11 different group organizers: Jacqueline Peterson, Abdel Krim, Abe Snyder, Cenie J. Williams, Ennis Francis, Joseph Steele, Piankhi Akinbaloye, Bernice Bolar, Adeyemi Oyeilumi, Lloyd Mayo, and Leonard Davis. The unique theme for the parade was “Africa’s Present to America.”
