Ariana DeBose Voices Disney’s 1st Afro-Latina Heroine In ‘Wish’

Actress Ariana DeBose will voice Disney’s first Afro-Latina heroine within the upcoming animated musical comedy Want.

The Oscar-winning star, whose father is Afro-Puerto Rican and mom is of Italian descent, will deliver life to 17-year-old Asha. The character is “a sharp-witted idealist” whose highly effective want is granted to Star, “a celestial ball of boundless power.” Regardless of the will of her coronary heart coming true, Asha and her pet goat Valentino have to search out the braveness to confront their kingdom’s chief, King Magnifico, and save their neighborhood.

Disney’s newest animated main woman is a freckle-faced magnificence with caramel pores and skin, hazel eyes and darkish brown braids. 

 

“Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, referred to as the dominion of needs,” famous co-director Chris Buck in an announcement. “Individuals come from in all places to present their needs to a magical king who guarantees to grant their deepest wishes—sometime. Solely he can resolve which needs will come true and when.”

Want hits the theaters on November 22 and options unique songs by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning multitalented musician Benjamin Rice. The movie’s rating is by composer Dave Metzger.

DeBose sang the anthem, “So I Made This Want,” within the musical comedy’s trailer — which Disney unveiled at CinemaCon in late April. 

“She is a brand new Disney heroine. We love that. She is her personal hero. I like that,” the actress stated about Asha on Good Morning America April 27.

 The star is most identified for her position within the 2021 Steven Spielberg rendition of the New York Metropolis-based basic West Aspect Story.

As a biracial lady who identifies as Afro-Latina, DeBose has been open about how her heritage has made her weary of her means to tackle sure roles. 

“I used to be hesitant to go in for a lot of causes. Latinas within the business don’t actually appear to be me — or hadn’t. And roles like this had probably not been manifested in Black Latinas — not for nothing,” the Broadway star informed the Los Angeles Occasions about her position within the Spielberg mission.

“My Afro Latinidad, my heritage, my lived expertise as a Black lady may give this one thing new, perhaps one thing we’ve but to see. However I additionally questioned whether or not there was area for that.”
