Stone was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up along with her sister in a single-parent family. She knew early on that she wished a profession in writing. In grade faculty, she was engrossed with literature. By highschool, she was writing for her faculty newspaper, and in faculty, sought out an accredited journalism faculty. She attended Michigan State College and created a Black newspaper for the scholars.

“I used to be all the time fascinated with the facility of story and storytelling. My mom was an avid reader,” mentioned Stone. That was an awesome instance for her.

Stone has labored at a number of publications in her over 25 yr profession, together with the Oakland Press, Detroit Free Press, and Boston Globe. She got here to New York in 1990 to work on the New York Occasions, staying there for about seven years earlier than making the change to journal writing at Essence. Stone mentioned it was essential to inform Black tales, particularly from Black girls’s views. She wrote about psychological and bodily well being, meals, vitamin, and holistic dwelling. 

After having fun with her time working at a prestigious Black publication, Stone left and dove into unbiased tasks. She wrote an in-depth guide, “No Secrets and techniques, No Lies,” about therapeutic sexual abuse and stigma in Black households. “I wrote that guide from the attitude of a survivor, which I’m, in addition to the attitude of different survivors who I interviewed,” mentioned Stone.
