Maya Angelou is among the world’s most well-known poets, so it was a unbelievable shock to find issues I by no means knew about this extraordinary literary genius. Superbly directed, thoughtfully choreographed, brilliantly written, and flawlessly acted, the world premiere of Phenomenal Lady didn’t disappoint. I felt many feelings as I loved each minute of this well-written play. I discovered a lot about Maya in each stage of her life and the dynamic girls who molded her into the internationally beloved and admired girl everybody is aware of.

Elizabeth Flax was an endearing and highly effective voice as older Maya narrating the story of Maya Angelou’s life at each stage. Manniah Harris, as younger Maya, was energetic, considerate, and tugged at my coronary heart as we skilled among the most traumatic experiences of her life.  Choreographer Aisha Ussery brilliantly took the viewers via varied feelings as Curtis Von portrayed Mr. Freeman, who took benefit of younger Maya’s innocence. I’ve by no means seen a traumatic occasion expressed in such an genuine and caring method—pure Genius.

Houston Actors Alirc Davis and Rita L. Hughes have been nice reminders of the overflowing glorious expertise that exists proper right here in our hometown. Lakeisha Randle, as Maya, was energetic, thoughtfully acted, and gorgeously portrayed with caring element. Foster Davis was a loving and nice shock portraying the lover and husband of Maya Angelou, Tosh Angelos, whom I by no means knew she had. Callina Anderson portrayed Vivian Baxter fantastically, bringing to life the girl I knew as Maya’s mom from I Know Why The Caged Chicken Sings. All the solid was stellar and a delight to look at. Bravo Brava to Angelica Cheri for creating this masterpiece which completely celebrates the Phenomenal Lady Maya Angelou was and why we’ll have a good time her for generations to come back.
