Deborah Cox has lengthy discovered methods to pay it ahead in her profession. Together with her newest stint on Broadway, she’s honoring a connection that dates again greater than 30 years.

Cox is about to star in “Titanique,” a musical comedy that serves as a parody of the 1997 hit movie “Titanic” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Rose McGowan. The movie went on to win a document 11 Academy Awards in 1998, together with Greatest Image and Greatest Unique Tune for “My Coronary heart Will Go On.”

The singer of stated tune? Céline Dion, who Cox credit for serving to launch her profession as she sang background for her within the early ’90s.

“I toured along with her for a yr,” Cox informed PEOPLE. “I used to be discovering what my musical voice was going to be,” Cox tells PEOPLE. “And within the interim, we’d go to all these completely different capabilities and tv exhibits and award exhibits and stuff. And I believe it was a couple of yr in is after I determined to go away the tour as a result of I wished to take an opportunity on myself and see if I may land a document deal.”

She added, “So I really feel like this present in some methods just isn’t solely a love letter to Céline due to the story and every thing, however an actual full circle second for me simply as an artist and a performer. She was someone that was one to look at so far as her self-discipline in the way in which that she took care of her voice, took care of her, the way in which she had such stamina all through the tour. She was only a actually variety boss.”

Cox’s time on tour finally led her to unfold her wings. After exiting, she would rating an opportunity assembly with music govt Clive Davis, the person behind powerhouses resembling Whitney Houston. Not lengthy after the assembly, Cox was signed to Arista Information in 1994. Regardless of releasing her debut album in 1995, Cox must wait three years earlier than she broke by for R&B and pop audiences with “No person’s Supposed To Be Right here.” The only peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Sizzling 100 chart and finally helped her sophomore album, 1998’s “One Want,” obtain platinum standing.

The irony of “My Coronary heart Will Go On” because it pertains to each “Titanic” and “Titanique” is that, though it’s extensively thought-about Dion’s most recognizable tune, neither the Canadian songstress nor her up to date had ever seen the musical parodying the film.

Cox has carved out a little bit of a profession on Broadway. In 2004, she starred in “Aida” as a substitute, although it could be one other 9 years earlier than she would get the stage bug once more. She carried out as Lucy Harris in an adaptation of “Jekyll & Hyde” in 2013, after which in 2024, she starred as Glinda the Good Witch in an adaptation of “The Wiz.”

What retains her motivated and passionate to pay it ahead? Discovering new challenges.

“I wished to return again to Broadway doing one thing very completely different,” she stated. “That to me is what retains me on my toes, retains me intrigued and pleased about new tasks to tackle. And comedy, I imply, I really like sketch comedy. I really like Whoopi Goldberg and Goldie Hawn and Carol Burnett. These have been the ladies that I grew up watching.”

“Titanique” has a 16-week restricted engagement on the St. James Theatre in New York. Opening evening is Sunday, April 12 and options Melissa Barrera in her Broadway debut alongside Cox, Frankie Grande and Jim Parsons.
