Mara Brock Akil has completed all of it, from showrunning to directing. Now the thoughts that helped form traditional collection reminiscent of “Girlfriends” and Netflix’s “Perpetually” is making an attempt one thing new: being a novelist.
In June, Akil will launch her first novel, “The Revelation of Dionne Daphne.” The ebook follows the title character as she navigates the journal world in her early ’30s in Nineteen Nineties-era New York Metropolis.
Daphne, a magnificence editor at a prestigious journal, has all of it. A thriving profession, a flourishing social life and extra. All of it’s upended when she receives life-threatening information from her companion, sending Daphne down a path of rediscovery few may have predicted.
“I wrote this novel with the intention of taking the reader by a narrative that could be acquainted. One among isolation, disgrace, resilience and the redemptive energy of affection,” Brock Akil stated in an announcement shared with PEOPLE. “My hope is that readers will see themselves in Dionne and acknowledge the burden they’ve been holding, and really feel permission to launch it.”
On Instagram, Akil shared the ebook’s cowl and a deeply private message about her intent.
“This story was born from a dialog with myself – an sincere reckoning with how my very own sexual trauma formed my sexual company,” she started. “Almost 1 in 3 ladies and 1 in 6 males within the U.S., alone, expertise sexual violence of their lifetime – and too many people carry the burden of it in silence.”
She added, “There’s a sample of disgrace that reveals up in our work, our houses, and our most intimate areas — a cycle the world desperately must confront, heal and alchemize.
