Two Brothers Drown After Plunging Into Icy Pond to Rescue Little Brother — But Stranger’s Split-Second Move Only Saves Mom

Authorities say three younger brothers died after falling into an icy pond following a large ice storm in Texas.

The boys, 9-year-old E.J. Doss, 8-year-old Kaleb Doss and 6-year-old Howard Doss, died on Jan. 26 within the rural city of Bonham, not removed from the Oklahoma border.

The boys’ mother and father spoke to native and nationwide information shops about how the tragedy unfolded.

In response to their mom, Cheyenne Hangaman, the household was staying at a buddy’s home to attend out the bitter winter storm that swept throughout a lot of the U.S. and left freezing temperatures in its wake.

Throughout the road from the house was a pond that Hangman informed the boys to not go close to. The pond had fully froze within the storm.

After they fell in, Hangman’s daughter alerted her mom, who instantly rushed outdoors.

“They have been simply screaming, telling me to assist them,” Hangaman informed The Related Press. “And I watched all of them wrestle, wrestle to remain above the water. I watched all of them struggle.”

Hangaman stated she ran throughout as a lot ice as she might to get to them earlier than falling in herself and doing her finest to pull the boys out of the water.

“I might seize one, attempt to put him on ice, however the ice simply saved breaking each time I might sit him up there,” she stated. “I might simply maintain making an attempt to go to every considered one of them, making an attempt to assist them, and it was solely me, like I couldn’t assist all of them on my own.”

A person who heard a cry for assist got here and threw a rope into the water to assist Hangaman out of the pond.

“I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t transfer,” she stated. “By that point, I knew that my youngsters have been already gone. So I simply needed to attempt to struggle for my life at that time.”

Authorities say that first responders and a neighbor pulled the our bodies of the 2 older boys from the water. The youngest youngster was recovered a lot later after an intensive search of the pond.

Hangaman described her sons as “bubbly.”

“You couldn’t actually cease their bubbliness,” she stated.

A GoFundMe web page was set as much as assist the household.

Funeral companies for the three boys have been held on Feb. 1 in Greenville, Texas.
