Somizi Mhlongo has spoken in regards to the detrimental response from some Nigerians to Tyla’s Grammy win over three Nigerian nominees in the identical class.
“I’m gonna discuss this as calmly and as politely as I can,” begins Mhlongo.
“… The extent of entitlement. The sense of entitlement. Hm? Grammys are usually not your mom’s leaping fort celebration.”
“Grammys are usually not Nigerian music awards. The extent of entitlement considering that solely Nigerians which might be nominated are certified [to win],” Mhlongo continues.
Mhlongo was reacting to the social media posts by some Nigerians, who criticised Tyla’s victory, saying the three Nigerian artists in her class had been extra deserving of the Grammy.
“I believe what hurts essentially the most is that it’s a woman, and it’s not a Nigerian girl… It’s a South African lady, who was nominated amongst three Nigerians, if I’m not mistaken.”
“Now you’re making us a laughing inventory to the world… take a look at these Africans. We’re giving them a chunk of the pie, and now they’re preventing over it,” says Mhlongo.
The negativity is dimming Davido’s stardom
“And also you’re taking away Davido’s credibility, his superstardom. Davido is a famous person.”
“Davido is an excessive amount of of a famous person to be caught up on this [inaudible]. Everybody in that class deserved to win. Belief me, I doubt there was gonna be a South African who was going to complain if any of the individuals who had been nominated gained. However South Africans had been going to be provoked if a Nigerian gained. Yo! We weren’t gonna hear the tip of it,” exclaimed Mhlongo.
“Cease it. And sadly, it’s not all Nigerians. It’s simply these [inaudible]. And what’s achieved is completed. Tyla has two, and she will be able to nonetheless get three.”
Details play a job with the Grammys, not feelings: Mhlongo
“Grammys don’t care about your feelings. It’s details. And you already know the details, by way of that tune… numbers don’t lie,” stated Mhlongo.
“Cease taking away the superstardom of all the opposite artists that had been nominated, as if solely Davido deserved to win… Each artist who was there deserved to win.”
“After which lastly, I wanna appropriate you once more… that class was not an Afrobeats class. It was one of the best African efficiency. And cease saying Tyla’s music isn’t African. Who the f%&$ do you suppose you’re? She’s South African, and we South Africans take pleasure in and resonate (with) the music,” stated Mhlongo.
“Cease considering you’re the gods of music. Nigerian music is gorgeous, however you’re taking away the great thing about African music,” concludes Mhlongo.
